Naturopathic Medicine Week, Day 1: What is a Naturopathic Doctor & my journey to becoming one!

The 6th Annual Naturopathic Medicine Week starts today through next Saturday.

We at Transformational Medicine are kicking off our celebrations by sharing a little insight into what exactly a Naturopathic Doctor is and my journey to becoming one.

Each day this week we will share information via email and on our Facebook page about Naturopathic Medicine, Health Tips, Special offers, and more.

What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

A licensed naturopathic physician (ND) attends a four-year, graduate-level naturopathic medical school and is educated in all the same basic sciences as an MD, but also studies Homeopathy, Botanical medicine, Counseling, and Bodywork or Physical medicine.

My Journey to becoming an ND

I had the opportunity to experience many different treatments while I worked overseas in Russia. Russians do acupuncture, water and mud therapies, massage, and more for health. I loved how I felt after being covered in mud and wrapped up like a burrito on the Black Sea! I eventually quit traveling and decided to go to massage school. That one year of weekly massages was life-changing. I knew I wanted to help people but I did not know about naturopathic medicine until I took a cadaver class at Bastyr University with my massage colleagues. I discovered that I loved Anatomy and found the workings of the human body truly fascinating. At my massage school graduation, I announced I would be going to Medical School. I wanted more tools to offer my clients. I grew up in Seattle, Washington knowing about alternative medicine and supplementation. But to be a doctor was a major decision. My first degree was in Theater, then I worked retail, then I worked as an overseas tour director. Life kept opening doors for me so I walked through!

I dove into getting caught up with prerequisites after being out of college for 10 years.  Math led to physics, organic and inorganic chemistry, then statistics… it was mind taxing but it prepared me to jump into medical school when I was 42!! Six years later I finished, all the while running a business and having a life with my spouse.

A few more years and I and my new husband, moved to Tucson, Arizona to start over in a warm climate and to be close by to help our aging parents. By May we met Lynda Witt and decided to open a business together… WellnessFirst opened summer of 2010 and we have been thriving ever since!!

We appreciate being your Naturopathic Doctor of choice and are committed to helping you achieve a healthy vibrant life … naturally!

Sincerely,

Dr. Saber
